The explosion in world tourism is one of the most remarkable economic and social phenomena of the last half-century. With only minor interruptions, the proportion of the world population taking part in tourism activity has risen year on year through the last three decades, and for many countries tourism has developed as one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy. Tourism is now one of the world’s largest industries. According to the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) international tourism generated US$514 billion in 2007. It accounts for 12% of international consumer spending and generates 1 in 12 jobs worldwide, making it vitally important for the global economy and the economic and social development of emerging markets in Asia, Latin America and Africa.
