Industry is the basis of the Belarusian economics; its share in the gross national product of the Republic constitutes over 60%. Here, we find over 1.400 large enterprises, integrated plants, works, factories, power plants, mines, open casts and oil fields, representing more than a hundred branches of industry.\r\nSpecialization of Belarus within the former USSR led to the development of such industries as motor and tractor industries, agrimachinery, production of synthetic fibres, mineral fertilizers, radio engineering, pharmaceutic industry, production of construction materials and others. The above enumeration shows the predominance of material-, labour- and science-intensive branches of industry, orientated towards the production of finished items. The developed state system of higher and secondary special education makes it possible to train highly skilled specialists and workers for the industry of Republic.\r\nMachine-building and metal-working enterprises produce over one fourth of the Belarusian industrial output (26.1%).\r\nThe Republic has specialized in the production of universal wheel tractors; whose output was over 95 thousand pieces in 1991. The Republic export «Belarus» tractors to 28 countries of the world, among them USA, Canada, France, Finland, Germany, Great Britain.\r\nBelarus produces different kinds of trucks; including dump trucks for quarries with load-carrying capacities of 30 to 180 tons.\r\n2. The machine-building industry specializes in the production of different kinds of metal-cutting machines, forging and press equipment.\r\nThe area of Belarus is 207,600 square kilometers (80,200 square miles). By the size of its territory Belarus ranks 13th among the European states. Administratively the country is divided into six regions with their centres in Minsk, Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno, Mogilyov. The regions are divided into districts.\r\n3. A powerful base for the production of computers and microelectronic devices has been created in Belarus.\r\nIt produces great quantities of clocks and watches, radio- and TV-sets, electrical instruments, instruments used to monitor and regulate technological processes.\r\nHousehold refrigerators and freezers are exported to many countries of the world.\r\n4. Four integrated ore-producing works, located in Soligorsk, manufacture potassium fertilizers; the Chemical Plant in Gomel manufactures mainly ammophos and ammophosphate; the Production Amalgamation «Azot» in Grodno manufactures high-quality nitrogenous fertilizers.\r\n5.
